Position Summary:

The Geophysical Institute (GI) is seeking an experienced Operations Manager. As the main contact for research staff and faculty, the operations manager is the main point of contact for departments that support the fieldwork of Geophysical Institute Researchers across Alaska and the world. Duties:

20Project Management: Manage GI land leases, permits, and licenses for research projects both in and out of state in close collaboration with the UA Land Management Office. Facilitate Air Force site visits located at Barter Island, Fort Yukon, and Tin City through the Alaska Radar System Site Visits Arrival Notice, when necessary. Create Memorandums of Understanding, Memorandums of Agreement, and Facility Use Agreements for research projects and services when needed. Other duties as assigned.Essential
30Supervision: Supervise Machine Shop, Electronics Shop, and GI Shipping & Receiving departments. Responsible for recruiting, training, performance management, annual employee evaluations, communicate priorities and goals. Manage space allocation for Geophysical Institute in the Elvey, Akasofu, Reichardt, West Ridge Research buildings as well as research sites at Poker Flat, HAARP, UPark storage, and College International Geophysical Observatory. Maintain, enforce, and update the GI’s space allocation policy when necessary. Account for space use by GI employees and equipment storage. Maintain Globe Room and Elvey Auditorium scheduling and use requirements. Manage and coordinate smooth and efficient operations of all GI facilities. Respond to building issues and occupant needs, manage custodial requests, building/office modifications, and other requests as needed. Responsible for 24/7 service to respond to GI emergencies. Coordinate with UAF facility services for building maintenance and input on capital renovation projects. Coordinate with UAF Space Planning Group when necessary for the installation of scientific equipment with antennas on the Elvey and Akasofu buildings. Represent the GI Director at meetings, both internal and external, in all matters relating to building renovations, maintenance, emergency closures, transportation, and utilities. Participate on campus committees and workgroups on behalf of the GI Director to support GI and UAF initiatives. Other duties as assigned.Essential
50Safety Officer: Serve as the safety official for the Geophysical Institute and works with on-campus and off-campus groups to ensure a safe working environment. Interact with faculty, staff, students, visitors, and other UAF departments and local and state agencies, as required. Represent the GI for code inspections, as well as work with employees on the day-to-day issues of ongoing safety requirements, policy, code awareness, and enforcement. Investigate accidents, both life and property; Coordinate safety operations and emergency response with the GI administration and operations staff. Maintain records as required by federal, state and local agencies, as well as by University and BOR policy. Provide ongoing logistical support for GI field work: storage/staging space, coordinate appropriate safety training, assign and invoice communication devices, and manage GI firearm storage. Manage security issues within Elvey, WRRB, Akasofu buildings and GI field sites. Identify the overall training needs of faculty and coordinate workshops and seminars to meet those needs. Represent the GI at meetings in all matters relating to building renovations, maintenance, emergency closures, transportation, and utilities. Participate on campus committees and workgroups to support GI and UAF initiatives, as requested. Manage security and access privileges within the Elvey and Akasofu buildings and for GI employees in the WRRB building. Coordinate the GI Chemical Hygiene Plan, and oversee the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials. Assign key access slips and manage card access privileges for employees in collaboration with the Lenel system administrator. Other duties as assigned.Essential

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Experience hiring, managing, motivating, evaluating, and training employees.
  • Experience in chemical hygiene and Hazardous Materials Training.
  • Ability to read floor plans.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws regarding regulations that govern contracts/leases and permits and experience in negotiation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to exercise analytical problem-solving.

Required Experience & Education:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field and five years progressively responsible experience in facilities management, construction management, business management or equivalent combination of training and expertise.

A valid driver's license and clean driving record in compliance with UA Safe Driving Criteria.



Salary Information:

This position is full-time, Grade 80, continuing, exempt, 12-month position complete with a competitive salary and UA employee benefits package. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, based on education and experience.



Special Instructions to Applicants:

This position will be physically located at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska. The successful finalist will be expected to report to duty at the UAF office on the first day of employment.
