Duties:
The incumbent principal responsiblities are to perform Computed Tomographhy stu! dies and perform technical work in the support of the diagnostic radiology procedures for the patients at the VAMC Martinsburg West Virginia. Examinations include, but are not limited to:
Staff DRT
Operate a Spiral Computed tomography (CT) Scanner
Examinations of the chest, abdomen, pelvis, head, extremities, neck, etc.
Perform CT Axial and/or #-D reconstruction scans to include drainages and biopsies
Schedule and recieve patient to incude verbal interview for demographic accuracy and Patient ID
Review Patient orders for accuracy
Position patients within the CT system, monitor patients during all phases of appropriate examinations and remove patients upon completion of the data and /or imaging acquistions
Administer contrast media and medication under the direction of a radiologist or physician
Perform technical and general operations and maintenacnce of the computer, disk drives, console, imaging devices, etc
Assist with developing t! raining programs for new technologist, physicians, residents, ! and general clinical staff
Register patients in the Vista system
Assist with developing training programs for new technologists, physicians, residents, and general clinical staff
Perform other duties as assigned

JOB SUMMARY: The DRT (CT Technologist) will perform CT exams and CT procedures under the direction of the Radiologist, they will be required to operate Toshiba 16 and 64 slice scanner, as well as computer software to produce quality images. The incumbent will also assist the radiologist or other privileged providers in performing invasive or interventional procedures under CT guidance. Incumbent will be responsible for preparing and administering intravenous contrast media in accordance with JCAHO, Local State, and Federal Regulations.

Qualifications & Evaluations

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: U.S. citizenship . Non-citizens may be appointed when it is ! not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. DRT/CT (CT Certified Required). All applicants must be certified in general radiological technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (AART) (R) and CT Certified.

English language proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Grade Determination: GS-9

Experience or Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associates degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on
Education in radiologic technology (JRCERT), and certification by the American registry of Radiologic technologists (ARRT) in radiology.

(1) Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Pat! ient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who! administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field.
(2) Non-certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for ARRT (R) certification may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate DRT under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a) (1) (D). Failure to obtain certification during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. This may result in termination of employment.

Experience: DRT/CT Computed Tomography. This specialty modality requires specific knowledge of cross sectional human anatomy and its a! pplication in spiral, and/or, multi-slice computer tomography, examinations. The technologist requires specific knowledge and training in the location, appearance, and function of the various major and minor systems susceptible to radiological illumination; to interpret the examination request accurately; to understand the functioning and inter-relationship of the various organs; to use the methods and techniques which will identify organs appearing on the digital display monitor, or on film, and the various stages of the examination to judge the acceptability of the image and/or scan for diagnostic use and to emphasize the aspects of particular interest to the physician. >In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates: Completion of 1 year experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled, and must fully meet the KSA! s at the that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the fo! llowing technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk *

Assignment. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments.
Staff DRT. Employees at this level are fully functional as a DRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varing assignments including special and complex radiographic procedures. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills and ability to perform at this level.

In Addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must met Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities!

  • (1) Ability to balance the needs of the patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures;
2) Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record,significant others, and health care providers;
  • (3) Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure;
(4) Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography;
(5) Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous skills, and universal precautions; and
(6)Knowledgeable in pre-procedureal, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients,
