Gonzalez Saggio & Harlan LLP, one of Milwaukee, Wisconsinâs largest law firms with 15 offices nationwide, is seeking a motivated individual as a Chief Marketing Officer. This full-time position will be responsible for directing the Firmâs marketing, business development, client relations and promotional activities.
This is a senior management level position reporting directly to the Managing Partner and working directly with the Firmâs Equity Partners. The role will involve three primary functions: (a) grow the Firmâs client base, (b) build the Firmâs brand ! equity and (c) position the Firm as the law firm of choice for! Fortune 50 clients in a number of key industries. The CMO will promote the firmâs unique position as the nationâs leading minority and women owned law firm.
The CMO, leading a team of marketing professionals, will work with partners to draft and execute the Firmâs business development strategy, and ensure that all aspects of the Firmâs marketing communications and marketing operations are effective, efficient and consistent with the Firm strategy.
In addition to general responsibility for all marketing and business development functions, the CMO will have the following specific duties and responsibilities:
Duties and Responsibilities:
Business Development
- Assist lawyers in identifying and cultivating prospective new clients.
- Identify key prospects for the Firm in a number of industries and assemble teams of lawyers to proactively pitch for new business.
- Assist the Firm in reinforcing relationships with exis! ting clients, and develop methods to enhance and measure client satisfaction.
- Develop programs to develop pitching techniques based on client/prospective client needs.
- Coordinate market research and competitive intelligence.
- Evaluate and enhance the use of the Firmâs client relationship management system (Filemaker); develop and maintain a tracking system for prospective clients; create, track and manage a data base of relationships and referral sources.
- Participate in strategic planning activities by the Firm and at the Practice Group level.
- Coach and train Practice Groups and individual lawyers in business development activities.
- Maximize the Firmâs results from membership in NAMWOLF and similar organizations.
- Develop an in-depth understanding of the Firm, its culture, its strategic direction, the target client base of each practice group and the product and service o! fferings of each practice group.
- Develop, present to Firm mana! gement and manage (with the assistance of the Firmâs accounting department) the marketing budget; develop methods for demonstrating return on the Firmâs marketing investment.
- Serve as a reference source for lawyers on the best practices in ethical law firm marketing.
- Work with Firm management and the Practice Chairs to build global awareness and brand/name recognition using communication vehicles such as advertising, website, brochures, newsletters, alerts, blogs, podcasts, networking events, sponsorships, firm-sponsored seminars, media ads, the Firmâs website, printed literature and presentation materials, and any other appropriate media/means.
- Direct outside public relations responses and develop effective relationships with media outlets in each geographic region of the Firm. Prepare and issue clear press releases and serve as editor-in-chief of Firm website and client alerts.
- Manage relationships with ranking organizations and p! ublicize awards, rankings, and recognitions.
- Evaluate and recommend changes in marketing philosophy.
- Track and analyze other law firmsâ marketing activities.
- Provide advice and assistance to the Equity Partners and practice group heads on promotional and marketing issues.
- Develop a strategy to increase referrals from the firmâs top 20 clients.
- Organize client satisfaction visits and surveys.
- Develop Firm-wide business development training programs.
- Work closely with Firm management, Practice Group Chairs and other partners to identify, analyze and pursue potential business development opportunities for Firm attorneys to serve both existing clients and prospective clients.
- Supervise drafting RFP submissions to ensure uniform delivery of Firmâs messaging and to best position the Firm to win more RFPs. !
- Evaluate RFP processes so that the firm is submitting proposals on! ly for the best opportunities.
- Support partners for participation in business contests/pitches.
- Work with the professional finance staff and requesting partners on fee proposals.
- Manage internal communications regarding marketing and business related information.
- Develop and ensure that the Firm has an effective methodology to collect, warehouse and utilize information on clients, prospective clients, referral sources, deal/case lists, enabling the Firm to perform strategic analysis and make sound business decisions.
- Track Firm successes (and failures).
- Develop and monitor related business development, marketing, client service and charitable contribution budgets.
- Develop, manage, and effectively delegate to a team of professionals and support staff capable of carrying out business development and marketin! g initiatives.
- Experience with minority and women-owned businesses.
- Five or more yearsâ experience leading the marketing or business development functions at a law firm or professional services firm.
- Bachelorâs degree in marketing, business, communications or a similar area.
- Experience in marketing, public relations, advertising or communications.
- Knowledge of business planning and targeting programs for both individual partners and practices.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities.
- History of exercising good business judgment and diplomacy in complex situations, handling sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and working under urgent time constraints.
- A law degree (as well as experience in practicing law in a law firm or corporate setting) or other direct experience in the rendering of professional services also is preferred.
